JENN | 'Who That Girl'

JENN 'Who That Girl'

Born in the West Indies to a French father and a Guyanese mother, and having lived in France for more than a decade, Jenn's music is a cultivation of a mixed culture of Afro-Caribbean, French and English influences. 'Who That Girl' is one of the tracks making up the EP 'Vibz'.

Listening to 'Who That Girl' comes with an experience of its own that isn't entirely unique. You've listened to great dance songs, right? You recall how they stirred you from within and spurred you on to react with body movements in line with the rhythm? I'm talking about the dance songs which you dance to with your ears to the lyrical content. Exactly. That's how it is with JENN's 'Who That Girl'.

It's always best to start a description from the beginning, hence I'm first talking about the song's intro. It is atmospheric, suspenseful, as though priming your senses for what's to come. And I must commend how it naturally sets the mood for the song and seamlessly builds into it. In my musical experience, I've listened to quite a number of songs whose intro come in very unnecessary. 'Who That Girl' doesn't count as one.

The strong rhythm of the song pulls me in. Its application is well thought out and delivered in tune with the song's dynamics. Instrumentally, the song scored high above an average rating. It boasts a generous application of digital effects so suiting in its delivery. Not always can this be said of many others in the generous use of digital effects. The producer of 'Who That Girl' evidently knows what to make of his skills.

I must confess that this is the best Dance songs I am listening to from recent times. And JENN has musically remained unknown to me up until this moment. Quite an impression she has created in my mind with this song that I went fishing around for her other songs. And I must say that she has a style which stands out. When you know her, you recognise her in an instant.

Between the vocals and instrumental accompaniment, I think it's the former which strikes me more. JENN has such vocals that come in assured and confident, with a tinge of alto. Talk of delicious peppery stew, and we will be heading somewhere with our description. Quite engaging is her vocal delivery of the song. She sure knows how to handle herself musically. And as for the lyrics, they are worth a listen; narrative, flowing, and effortless. You should perceive the feeling with which they are delivered.

'Who That Girl' is a great song with a strong commercial appeal for young adults. It very much can be compared to a musical delivery by Shakira. I can already imagine a dance group giving it form in dance moves.
