Independent Haisla hip hop crew Snotty Nose Rez Kids impress with their second full-length release of the year.
The Northern BC duo are following up their titled debut with The Average Savage. MCs Yung Trybez (aka Zazaxsmalis) and Young D (aka Darren Metz) create laid-back pulsations coated with masterful doubled-up rhymes that first sound brazen and indifferent, but that’s only icing on an impressive 17 tracks of powerful political commentary.
Taking common racist terms like savages, Indians, and red skins, Snotty Nose Rez Kids reclaim these put-downs with the intention of stripping away the damage they intend to inflict. The album samples common racist vintage media, civil rights speeches, mournful Morna vocalizations, old gospel, traditional native singing, languid bass lines, and orchestral flourishes over raw 808 beats.
Calling in their clan of guest contributors that include Drezus, Salia Joseph, Hellinback, and Wellspoke, The Average Savage is a potent collection of first-hand life stories designed to expose their truth and enlighten the ignorant.
Hard-hitting and overflowing with tragic tales and biting satire this is the kind of rap I wish I would see more of. My opinion has always been that hip hop is about kicking out the real world, a place for truth talkers, a platform for the oppressed, and that’s the way this album comes down. A pair of reality rhyme tricksters Snotty Nose Rez Kids fire off an onslaught of razor-sharp aphorisms, jammed between thick chunks of bass, and dripping with consciousness.
